It's Never Too Late to Build a Life That Actually Fits You
There's a voice in my head that still keeps a schedule for my life, one I never actually agreed to. The degree by this age, the career by that one, the version of yourself you're supposed to be settled into by now. Nobody handed me that timeline. I just picked it up somewhere along the way and started measuring myself against it.
I don't actually believe in that timeline. Most of the paths I've taken have looked late, or different, or out of order compared to what I thought they'd look like by now. But the voice still shows up sometimes.
This week's guest on the show, Yuliya Kuklina, heard a version of that same voice. She was in her 30s, learning an entirely new industry, sitting in a room with people years younger than her, and she kept thinking she was too late. Like she'd already missed the window where this was supposed to happen for her.
She wasn't too late. She's built a whole career now doing work she actually looks forward to. None of the years before that were wasted. They were just early chapters she hadn't recognized the use of yet.
The Timeline We Think We're Supposed to Follow
Somewhere along the way we absorb a schedule for our own lives that nobody actually wrote down. Graduate by this age. Settle into a career by this age. Figure it out by this age. When we miss a mark on that invisible schedule, it feels like proof that we're behind, instead of proof that the schedule was never real to begin with.
Age Is Not a Deadline
The "too late" feeling rarely comes from evidence. It comes from comparison. You look around the room, notice everyone looks younger or further along, and your brain fills in the rest of the story before you've actually tested whether it's true.
What Actually Makes a Life Feel Like Yours
The people I talk to on this show who've rebuilt their careers later than they expected rarely describe it as catching up. They describe it as finally building something that fits, on their own terms, without a race stapled to it.
